The Chesapeake Marine Towing and Assistance Association is a regional chapter of C-PORT, the national association for the marine assistance industry. In 1988, only five years after the industry was created, owners of the handful of marine assistance companies formed a group to discuss the issues they faced in the fledgling industry. Two years later, in 1990, CMTAA became the first regional chapter of C-PORT. As C-PORT began to develop its mission, the cooperation between companies who were otherwise competitors that CMTAA had spawned on a regional level became a model for the national association, which continues to this day. Today, CMTAA boosts a membership roster representing nearly 90% of all assistance companies in the Maryland waters of the Bay. We hold monthly meetings between September and May, which include two meetings with Coast Guard Sector Baltimore's SAR office. In recent years, CMTAA has developed relationships with other departments within the Coast Guard and other agencies as well. During our meetings we discuss issues relating to government agencies to updates on pending legislation which effects our industry to changes in aids to navigation.
